บทคัดย่อ:

วัดคอนเซ็ปชัญ หลังปัจจุบันสร้างขึ้นโดยบาทหลวงปัลเลอกัว ในพ.ศ. 2480 โดยใช้รูปแบบผสมผสานระหว่างสถาปัตยกรรมสยามและสถาปัตยกรรมตะวันตกหรือที่เรียกกันว่าอาคารแบบวิลันดา อันเป็นรูปแบบที่นิยมในสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลายจนถึงสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น ต่อมาในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปแบบโดยก่อสร้างหอระฆังเครื่องก่อเพิ่มเติมเข้าไปทางทิศตะวันตก ในรูปแบบนีโอ-โรมันเนสก์ โดยสถาปนิกชาวออสเตรียผู้วางรากฐานสถาปัตยกรรมตะวันตกในสยามคือโจอาคิม กรัสซี ในปัจจุบันสามารถสังเกตร่องรอยการปฏิสังขรณ์ต่อเติมได้จากลวดลายบัวประดับอาคารที่แตกต่างกันอย่างสิ้นเชิงระหว่างศิลปะสยามที่ตัวโบสถ์ และศิลปะนีโอ-โรมันเนสก์ที่บริเวณหอระฆัง วัดคอนเซ็ปชัญจึงเป็นตัวอย่างของสถาปัตยกรรมในคริสต์ศาสนาที่ผสมผสานระหว่างศิลปะตะวันตกและตะวันออก และถือได้ว่าเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมคาทอลิกที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดที่ยังมีการใช้งานในปัจจุบัน

ABSTRACT:

The present version of the Immaculate Conception Church in Bangkok was founded by Bishop Jean-Baptiste Pallegoix in 1837 A.D. It was built in the style of Vilanda, the architectural blending of the Siamese and the Baroque building styles which flourished during the late Ayutthaya to early Bangkok periods. In 1883, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, the Neo-Romanesque masonry bell tower at the western façade was added by Joachim Grassi, the famous Austrian architect who designed numerous western style buildings in Bangkok. 

Nowadays, the traces of the reconstruction can still be found in the different styles of stucco; the style shown on the church is Siamese, while the one on bell tower is Neo - Romanesque. This marvelous building undoubtedly exemplifies the mixture of western and eastern arts. Also, the present version of the Immaculate Conception Church is considered to be the oldest Catholic Church in Thailand that is still enjoyed by both Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
